What have SVACE faculty members been up to? We have exciting updates from Jade Doskow, John A. Parks, Naomi Elena Ramirez, and Steve Brodner.

Jade Doskow is featured at Slate and Smithsonian Magazine for her Lost Utopias project. Meanwhile, her successful Kickstarter campaign raised almost $15,000 to print a Lost Utopias monograph. Of Jade’s work, Smithsonian writes, “She has photographed the remnants of visions past, the architectural wonders and landscapes that celebrated human glory and potential.”

John A. Parks was interviewed at Artists Network on the topic of painting New York City. Drawing from years of teaching wisdom, John observes that painting is “perceptual training, not the acquiring of a manual skill.” See our review of John’s recent solo show in Chelsea.

Naomi Elena Ramirez, a faculty member and alum of our Residency Programs, is a 2016-2017 A.I.R. Fellow.  The Fellowship is for underrepresented and emerging self-identified women artists and includes mentoring, professional development, and exhibition opportunities at A.I.R. Gallery. Naomi’s exhibition will open in July 2017. And more recently, her video, I Love You, was featured at Mountain Gallery in Bushwick.

For the current Village Voice cover, Steve Brodner brings together concept and composition in an illustration that demonstrates the disturbing and absurd qualities of Donald Trump’s dominance of the 2016 election primaries. See Brodner’s Trump illustration for The Nation for an extra serving of Trump scrutiny.

Viktor Koen in Graphis Typography 3

Graphis Typography 3 features Viktor Koen’s “Artphabet” from “The ABCs of SVA” subway posters. “The tome presents work by some of the top international design and type design masters in the industry,” according to Graphis. Viktor is a prolific illustrator who deserves a print record of his work, which already thrives in digital formats.

Grant Shaffer was included in La Mama Family Show at La Mama Galleria.  For the annual La MaMa Family Show, artists and staff from throughout the institution’s 54 year history are invited to contribute pieces of art for display. Also, Grant recently contributed five illustrations to Robot Takeover by Ana Matronic.

Grant Shaffer did the drawings for a new line of Club Cumming glasses, trays, and mugs.  Find them at Fishs Eddy, where 10% of every sale will go to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Finally, Viktor Koen has posted images from his ambitious SVA Philanthropy & Sustainability Poster Project in Athens! He writes, “Curating the best 24 entries from the entire last academic year is never easy but thankfully, their sequence and hanging order came together organically and helped the posters interact dynamically.” The show featured students in the SVA MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program.
