Happy Friday! Might we suggest recent art, design, and culture goodies shared by the SVACE faculty and community?
Sara Varon will be featured in Women in Illustration, a group exhibition at SVA that brings together nine prestigious MFA Illustration as Visual Essay alumni who have authored or illustrated notable books in the past year.
Valerie Smaldone will moderate a panel discussion at 92nd Street Y about the actress Madeline Kahn. At the event, William V. Madison, author of Madeline Kahn: Being the Music, A Life, and some of Kahn’s friends and colleagues will share memories of the popular singing actress.
Ilene Strizver continues her TypeTalk series of typography articles for CreativePro.com. Her most recent post introduces the typeface Gill Sans Nova, and traces its origins from Gill Sans, a popular typeface that you’ve seen everywhere – even if you didn’t know it.
Interview Magazine featured Keith Mayerson for My American Dream, his vast solo show at Marlborough Chelsea! Keith says, “‘My American Dream’ speaks to the new, more inclusive America that has taken form in the past decade.”
A painting by Tristan Elwell is featured in Wild About Harryhausen at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles! His oil painting depicts Talos from Jason and the Argonauts.
Steve Brodner speaks in “Barack Obama: Portraits of a President” at the Society of Publication Designers, with fellow illustration luminaries Barry Blitt, Anita Kunz, and Edel Rodriguez!
Publishers Weekly reviewed Sweatherweather by Sara Varon! A highlight: “Varon’s characters, their sheepish expressions, and their animated conversations are unfailingly delightful, while flashes of graphic inventiveness—a fake flyer bound into the book, a set of carefully engineered paper dolls—are icing on the cake.”

The exhibition features artwork by Amelie Persson, Julia Franques, Richard Sansone, Sibba Hartunian, and Sibu Puthenveettil, on view at 209 East 23rd Street until September 30th!
